The new mill in Nelson was called Springbank Mill and was the second largest weaving mill in the world at the time (748 shuttle looms). The company moved to Springfield Mill in Blacko in 1968 and converted to the first automatic weaving machines in the UK. In 1986, Peter Reed moved to a new weaving mill in Nelson, Lancashire, also called Springfield Mill. In 2003, after a difficult period, the company changed hands and the new owners renamed and completely revitalized the company (which had been shrinking considerably). The newly formed Peter Reed Limited (PRL) built a new factory in Burnley, in the heart of the traditional textile region of Lancashire, before returning to Nelson (Butterworth Mill) in 2007. PRL has rebuilt the Peter Reed brand and produces 100% Egyptian cotton bed linen to the traditional luxury standards established many years ago. Today, Peter Reed is one of the few factories that has been operating in the UK for over a century. In January 2008, Peter Reed was once again awarded the Royal Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen as a manufacturer of bed linen: an honor of which they are very proud. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

<\/strong>Egyptian cotton<\/strong><\/p>

The cotton used to make Peter Reed bed linen comes directly from the Egyptian Nile Delta. This area, with its rich alluvial soil and natural humidity, produces a unique and lustrous cotton crop that is among the finest fibres in the world. Egyptian cotton is ideal for use in bed linen as it \u2018breathes\u2019, is dust-free and thrives with frequent washing and use. <\/p>

Cotton grown in the warm climate and rich soil of the Nile Delta has a particularly long staple fibre (over 2 1\/4″ in length), which allows for the spinning of exceptionally fine yarns. These fine yarns produce an extremely soft yet durable fabric. <\/p>

Combed cotton<\/strong><\/p>

Peter Reed percale bed linen is made exclusively from specially selected, high-quality combed yarns. Before spinning, shorter cotton fibres are removed during combing. This ensures that the yarns are spun only from the longest fibres of the cotton harvest. This is what makes Peter Reed linen so incomparably soft. <\/p>

High thread count<\/strong><\/p>

The thread count of a fabric is the number of intersections of yarns (warp and weft) in a given area (expressed in square inches or centimetres). Fabrics with more than 180 threads per square inch are classified as \u201cpercale\u201d and those with more than 250 per square inch as \u201csuper percale\u201d. Fine thread counts are given after natural wash shrinkage. Thread counts for fabrics containing multi-ply yarns can be misleading as they do not reflect a pure measure of intersections in the weave. Peter Reed panel constructions have been produced for many years and have become established as the industry and hotel standard. The standard range includes thread counts of 180, 220, 400 and 540 (the 400 and 540 thread fabrics are double-layered). <\/p>

Gewebte Kanten<\/strong><\/p>

All bleached Peter Reed sheets are finished with a special selvedge edge wherever possible, rather than being sewn around all four hems. A woven selvedge edge is formed when the fabric is in the loom, giving the fabric a strong and clean edge that will outlast a sewn hem when washed. <\/p>

Dimensioning and tolerances for shrinkage<\/strong><\/p>

All Peter Reed flat sheets are manufactured with high shrinkage to ensure sufficient shrinkage for extra deep mattresses. King size sheets are finished at 117\u2018 (295 cm), and super king at a luxurious 126\u2019 (320 cm). Fitted sheets and duvet covers are manufactured with 5-8% shrinkage in mind, which occurs during the first few washes of the item. In accordance with industry standards, flat sheets and pillowcases are labelled with the actual sewn sizes, while fitted sheets, valances and duvet covers are labelled with the residual size after the expected shrinkage. Peter Reed fitted sheets are manufactured with a generous gusset that can accommodate mattresses up to 10″ (25 cm) deep; deeper gussets are available upon request. <\/p>

Generous hems<\/strong><\/p>

All Peter Reed hems are stitched with at least 12 stitches per inch to ensure the item’s longevity. Our 1\u00bc\u2018 (3.125 cm) wide bottom hem and 3\u2019 (7.65 cm) wide top hem provide a rich finish and make ironing easier, whether by hand or with a calender machine. <\/p>

All ranges are finished with classic cord stitching, sewn at 28 stitches per inch. In the days when all linen was bleached white, different rows of cord stitching were used to identify the different qualities of the sheets. Peter Reed Linen continues this tradition today with additional rows of lacing for higher thread counts. <\/p>

Overlock with safety seam<\/strong><\/p>

All Peter Reed duvet covers and standard pillowcases feature double-stitching and safety seams for durability during washing and bed-making.<\/p>

Traditional mitered pillowcases<\/strong><\/p>

Peter Reed Oxford style pillowcases with a decorative flange, or valance, around the edge are sewn throughout with traditional mitered corners. Their construction requires the assembly of three separate pieces of fabric and skillful sewing.
