Whilst the general trend moves towards ever finer and thinner yarns, the Hoffmann Linen Weaving Mill works with a yarn weight that our grandmothers knew from the finest trousseau textiles. The bed linen of the Hoffmann Linen Weaving Mill is as good as the trousseau your grandmother received. Hoffmann’s bed linen is made from 100% pure linen. Linen bed linen by Hoffmann has a climate-regulating effect, absorbs moisture and releases it in a controlled manner, repels dirt and simply feels wonderful. It is of a heavy quality and made to last a lifetime.
In its full fibre purity, linen can develop its qualities ideally. It absorbs a great deal of moisture and releases it quickly. This makes the fabric perfect for bed linen – in summer as in winter.
In the historically rich Upper Lusatia, the Hoffmann Linen Weaving Mill has had its headquarters since 1905. The quality of its fine fabrics was and remains coveted throughout Europe. They adorned the tables of manor houses and luxurious passenger steamships. Today, the Hoffmann Linen Weaving Mill is one of the last still-active weaving mills in Germany. Here, time-honoured craft traditions are upheld and the highest quality produced.
Whether the night is warm with summer heat or you are nestled in a cosy bed during the cold season – beneath Hoffmann linen bed linen it stays snug and, above all, dry. The duvet covers and pillowcases of the Hoffmann Linen Weaving Mill are fitted with classic linen buttons.
For centuries, flax has been cultivated in the tri-border region between Bohemia, Silesia and Saxony. There, in Upper Lusatia, a great variety of linen fabrics were produced – from coarse sacking to the finest linen damask for exquisite household linen.
Martin Hoffmann was a merchant. Together with the manufacturer Karl-Gustav Schulze, he founded in 1905 the “Mechanische Weberei, Appreturanstalt, Konfektion- und Kartonfabrik Schulze und Hoffmann” (Mechanical Weaving Mill, Finishing Works, Garment and Cardboard Factory Schulze and Hoffmann). Behind this lengthy company name, typical of the era, lay a business with a clear focus. For from the very beginning, the entrepreneurs Hoffmann and Schulze specialised in the production of jacquard fabrics and embroidery. The sought-after products allowed the company to grow rapidly. Linen damasks, fine linen fabrics and practical tea towels and hand towels made of linen soon complemented the range. The embroidery and sewing department further processed the fabrics into napkins, tablecloths and bed linen.
For decades, the linen products from Upper Lusatia were sold throughout Germany. The embroidered goods were equally popular in England. Major buyers of bed and household linen made from pure linen included, among others, hotels and shipyards. They valued the linen, which was produced almost entirely by hand.
After the Second World War, the company was nationalised as a state-owned enterprise under the GDR. Production shifted to cotton towels for the West German market – specifically for department store chains.
Reunification set the course anew once more. The descendants of the merchant Hoffmann were able to take over the business. The current management of the Hoffmann Linen Weaving Mill consciously builds upon the Upper Lusatian tradition of linen weaving.
It is the looms to which the Hoffmann Linen Weaving Mill owes its quality products. Among them is a shuttle loom of what is now classic-historical value. It weaves special fabrics with firm selvedge edges. These are suited to robust mangle cloths, which are considered a speciality of the Hoffmann Linen Weaving Mill. Tubular fabrics for the production of ribbon weaves and sacks are also manufactured on this machine.
In addition, there are electronically controlled, modern weaving machines (rapier looms) and the jacquard weaving machines. From these looms comes the premium, fine pure linen damask. Luxurious table and banquet cloths as well as bed linen are produced from this noble fabric and meet the highest standards.
Fabrics made from pure linen, half-linen and cotton are produced in widths of 80 to 190 cm. Depending on the weave, the fabric weight varies between 70 and 600 g per square metre. Versatile colour combinations and the most diverse patterns are produced. Alongside check, stripe and jacquard patterns, individually woven name inlays are also part of the range. At the Hoffmann Linen Weaving Mill, customer wishes are still given the highest priority. Thanks to its broad range of weaving machinery, the Upper Lusatian manufactory can implement its customers’ special design requests flexibly and swiftly. The company thus offers far more than standard goods.
This also includes in-house tailoring. The Hoffmann Linen Weaving Mill produces individual pieces or collections in small quantities. These are then individually made up and sewn to the precise final dimensions according to the customer’s specifications.
On mild summer nights, the bed linen of the Hoffmann Linen Weaving Mill reveals its special quality. It lies pleasantly cool against the skin. It absorbs a great deal of moisture, yet still feels dry. Just a hundred years ago, these outstanding qualities of linen bed linen were common knowledge. It often formed part of the bride’s wedding trousseau and was elegantly embroidered or adorned with fine crocheted lace.
Then cheaper cotton came onto the market and gradually displaced linen bed linen. Yet cotton bed linen absorbs considerably less moisture and releases it far less effectively. On warm summer nights, it quickly becomes clammy against the body. With the triumph of cotton, the cultural landscape changed too. Flax once grew across half of Europe, bathing the fields in the luminous blue of its blossoms.
