Libeco – Real Fabric at Home the World Over

Belgian fabric. At home the world over. Libeco has been weaving linen that collects stories since 1858. Royal warrant holder to the Belgian Crown, carbon-neutral, GOTS-certified. Bed linen, table linen, plaids and accessories for those who prefer the real to the perfect.
Linen is the oldest cultivated fabric of humankind – and still the cleverest. It cools when it is warm. It warms when it is cold. It absorbs moisture and releases it again. With every wash it grows softer, with every year more beautiful. The long, smooth flax fibres repel dirt and stay fresher for longer than any other textile. That is not romance. That is physics.
“Belgian Linen” is not a designation of origin like “Parmesan” or “Champagne” – and yet comparable. The label guarantees: woven in Belgium, from European flax, certified and traceable. Only six weaving mills worldwide are permitted to carry it. It is the quality seal that has protected the highest standards of Belgian weaving artistry since 1960.

Bed Linen Made from Linen – Libeco

Libeco knows and values the tradition-consciousness of its clientele, yet equally and deliberately appeals to the younger generation. One example of this is the “Heritage Flax” bed linen, made from organic linen.
This linen originates from controlled organic cultivation and is processed in accordance with the stringent Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which demands the highest environmental and sustainability criteria.
Linen is by nature a particularly sustainable raw material, which further strengthens its ecological footprint. Libeco’s bed linen range impresses overall with its well-balanced design and consistently high quality. With its “Master of Linen” certification, Libeco sets benchmarks in sustainability and transparent provenance (made in Europe).

Thinking about identifying royal suppliers to the Belgian royal householdRoyal Warrant Holder to the Belgian Crown

The roots of the Libeco linen weaving mill reach back to 1858, when Victor Lagae together with Louis Carton founded a manufactory for batiste fabrics and handkerchiefs in the Belgian city of Kortrijk. Just six years later, Paul Libeert likewise established a trading company for linen fabrics in Kortrijk. Both enterprises developed independently of one another, yet over the course of the decades increasingly focused on the production of linen.
In 1997, they finally merged. The descendants of Libeert and Lagae anticipated a strengthening of their market position. A central element of the merger agreement was the complete preservation of all jobs as well as the guarantee that social standards, wages and salaries would remain unchanged. The only visible change was the relocation of the new combined company’s headquarters from Kortrijk to Meulebeke, the site of Lagae’s weaving mill and flax mill.

Libeco – Sustainable Products

Belgium enjoys an excellent reputation as a centre of expertise for flax and linen – and not only in Europe, but worldwide. The term “Belgian Linen” is synonymous with the highest artisanal quality. This mastery is upheld by some 1,500 companies united in the flax and linen association.
Libeco bed linen conveys a sense of calm and balance. Its design is pared back and defined by clear stripes, sometimes narrower, sometimes broader, running horizontally or vertically depending on the model. What makes this simplicity so special is the perceptibly premium quality of the fabrics. Combined with a subtle colour palette dominated by natural tones, Libeco deliberately eschews obtrusive effects.

Special Care Instructions for Various Libeco Products

  • Table linen (tablecloths, napkins):
  • Treat stains immediately. Dab up liquids straight away.
  • Where possible, napkins should not be left for extended periods with heavy oil or acid stains.
  • Bed linen:
  • The bed linen becomes softer and more comfortable with every wash.
  • As it comes into contact with the body, the use of a mild, skin-friendly detergent is particularly important.
  • Towels and terry products:
  • On first use, they may be less absorbent. This resolves after the first wash.
  • Do not use fabric softener! Fabric softener coats the fibres like a film and makes towels less absorbent.
  • Decorative fabrics (curtain fabrics, cushions):
  • These fabrics are often not washable, particularly if they have been finished (treated) or printed with special techniques. The rule here is: always check the care label!
  • For light soiling, airing outdoors or professional dry cleaning is often the better choice.

The Epoch as an Anchor Point

The visual world of Libeco is rooted not in a single epoch, but in an attitude: the effortless elegance of the well made.
Where Schlitzer Leinen takes its cues from Bauhaus and Art Déco, Libeco draws its visual power from a different creative tension: the Flemish craft tradition on one hand – Bruegel, Vermeer, the materiality of Dutch painting – and the contemporary transatlantic lifestyle on the other. Hamptons meets Flanders. North Sea coast meets Pacific.
The reference is not the museum, but the lived-in house. Not the gallery, but the kitchen where cooking takes place. Not the studio, but the veranda in the morning.
Libeco’s aesthetic is the Axel Vervoordt school: wabi-sabi with a European soul. Materials that are allowed to age. Spaces that breathe. Fabrics you want to touch.
