SINCE 1996

The Evolution of Linen Lounge

It all began in 1996 with dish towels and hand towels from the Frankfurt region. In the villages and small towns of Taunus, Rhön, Schlitzerland, Wetterau, and Vogelsberg, what is now rarely found still existed: genuine linen weaving mills that have cultivated their craft for generations. What started as regional trade grew over the years into a European selection.

In 2006, weaving mills from outside the region joined for the first time: Leitner Leinen from Austria, Hoffmann from Upper Lusatia, Schlitzer Leinen from Hesse. Four years later, Libeco from Belgium and other manufacturers from our neighboring countries followed. The assortment became more international, but the quality remained: We only sell from weaving mills whose workshops we have visited, whose people we have met, whose fabrics we have held in our hands.

In 2011, we opened a pop-up store next to Frankfurt’s Kleinmarkthalle; a few months later, the first brick-and-mortar store followed in the Sandhofpassage on Liebfrauenberg – right in the heart of Frankfurt. At the same time, we began to report on our weaving mills and their extraordinary fabrics in a blog.

In 2016, we founded Linen UG and restructured the company. What began as passionate trade became a professional specialist retailer for European linen. When Corona brought an abrupt end to the retail store in 2020, the digital channel had long been the main pillar.

In 2025, “The Spirit of Linen” will be published – a book that tells the story of this unique fabric. In 2026, we will begin to make the best of European linen accessible to the world beyond the seas.

This is already my second order with The Linen Lounge. After the first set of bedding, which has served us faithfully for two years, we have now reordered for the guest room. The quality is once again outstanding. Here, nothing is promised that cannot be delivered.

Our Philosophy

01

The Genuine Fabric

We do not carry anonymous trade goods. Every piece that leaves our house comes from a weaving mill we know. Whose machines we have seen. Whose people we can call by name. What we sell is verifiable: origin, material, processing. No marketing promises, but facts woven into the fabric.

02

From Table to Feast

We believe that good materials can transform everyday life. A linen cloth on the table turns dinner into a feast. A linen blanket changes how you sleep. Linen breaks through the routines of the mundane – not through effort, but through a different quality of touch, sight, experience.

03

We Know Every Loom

Our partners are Europe’s great traditional weaving mills: Leitner Leinen from Austria, Libeco from Flanders, Hoffmann from Upper Lusatia, Vieböck from Mühlviertel, Schlitzer Leinen from Hesse, Geniksa from the Baltics. Each of these manufacturers has its own history, its own signature, its own mastery.

04

Better with Every Year

In Europe’s best weaving mills, old looms stand alongside state-of-the-art technology. Some machines are a hundred years old and still weave the finest linen because no one has invented anything better since. The knowledge of the old masters flows into new forms. Linen does not age. It gets better.
