The fact that the down of birds such as geese or ducks is ideal for filling comforters or pillows was discovered quite early on. It was first mentioned in connection with a Roman emperor named Elagabal from the third century A.D., who reigned rather unsuccessfully and was only able to occupy the throne of the Roman Empire for four years. At least he probably had a good night’s sleep, as Elagabal had his pillows filled with the down of partridges. It can be assumed that down comforters and down pillows were used even earlier.

Down is the undercoat of birds and is characterized by interesting properties. The down is highly elastic and it spreads its feather branches in all directions. When down is compressed, it returns to its original shape. As a result, numerous small air pockets form in each individual down, which have an insulating effect without creating a barrier. Instead, the down interacts with the body temperature and the incoming moisture by slowly transferring it. This ability of down to expand again after it has been compressed is referred to as “loft”. The degree to which a down is fluffy depends on the origin of the duck or goose from which it comes. The further north the region of origin, the stronger the fluffiness. The record holder in this respect is the eider goose, which lives north of the Arctic Circle.
