Mariage
Mariage – the wedding, the union, the harmonious interplay. With this design, Leitner Leinen brings to life one of the most significant epochs of textile art: the Renaissance. In Elizabethan England, in the Italian city-states and Burgundian residences, a textile formal language of unparalleled refinement emerged between the 15th and 17th centuries. Scrollwork and arabesques, inspired by Oriental trade routes and the discoveries of the “New World”, merged into that playful elegance that still characterises the pure linen Mariage today. The finely contoured tendrils lay themselves like an ornamental net across the surface – subtle enough for contemporary interiors, expressive enough to transform the festive table into a place of timeless beauty. Here, one does not simply set a table: here, cultural memory stages itself in textile form. The table becomes a stage upon which Renaissance ornamentation and modern dining meet.

The Weaving Mill
Since 1853, the Leitner Manufactory in Vöcklabruck, Austria, has been weaving linen of a quality that can only be achieved through artisanal continuity. Mariage is created in fine Jacquard linen weave – a process in which the pattern is not printed on but woven directly into the fabric structure. Every arabesque, every tendril is not an overlay but an integral part of the fabric. The Jacquard technique, named after its inventor Joseph-Marie Jacquard (1752–1834), makes it possible to realise complex pattern progressions by individually raising or lowering each warp thread. The result is a relief-like fabric in which patterned and unpatterned areas differ haptically – a subtle effect that reveals itself both to the touch and to the eye. The manufactory in Vöcklabruck still works with mechanical looms that are superior to modern machines in their precision, because they absorb the irregular thread progression typical of linen rather than fighting it. This produces fabrics of that even irregularity which mechanical perfection can never achieve.

Description

“Mariage”

Mariage – the marriage, the union, the harmonious interplay. With this design, Leitner Leinen brings to life one of the most important epochs in textile art: the Renaissance. In the England of Elizabeth I, in the Italian city states and the Burgundian residences, a textile design language of unparalleled sophistication emerged between the 15th and 17th centuries. Vines and arabesques, inspired by oriental trade routes and the discoveries of the “New World”, merged to create the playful elegance that still characterizes pure linen mariage today. The finely contoured tendrils cover the surface like an ornamental net – discreet enough for contemporary interiors, expressive enough to transform the festive table into a place of timeless beauty. This is not simply a place to set the table: Here, cultural memory is staged in textile form. The table becomes a stage on which Renaissance ornamentation and modern tableware meet.

European organic linen

Linen for the table is more than just decoration – it is functional beauty with a history. The linen fiber, obtained from the blue-flowering flax fields of Western Europe, combines extraordinary material properties: The smooth, tightly closed surface initially repels liquids and allows time for reaction before a stain can form. At the same time, linen is highly absorbent as soon as it is soaked – ideal for napkins that need to work effectively when wiping. The fiber is naturally antistatic, meaning it does not attract dust or lint, and is bacteriostatic, making it ideal for contact with food. Linen creases – this is not a weakness, but the visible expression of its naturalness. With every wash, the fiber becomes softer and the feel fuller without losing any of its strength. Tablecloths and napkins made from European organic linen become more beautiful with use, developing patina instead of wear. The GOTS certificate guarantees that no chemical bleaching agents, synthetic pesticides or optical brighteners were used from cultivation to further processing – only mechanical processes and controlled dyeing.

The Weaving Mill

Since 1853, Leitner Manufaktur in Vöcklabruck, Austria, has been weaving linen in a quality that can only be achieved through continuity of craftsmanship. Mariage is produced in a fine jacquard linen weave – a process in which the pattern is not printed on, but woven directly into the fabric structure. Each arabesque, each tendril is not an overlay, but an integral part of the fabric. The Jacquard technique, named after its inventor Joseph-Marie Jacquard (1752-1834), makes it possible to create complex patterns by individually raising or lowering each individual warp thread. The result is a relief-like fabric in which patterned and unpatterned areas differ haptically – a subtle effect that unfolds both to the touch and to the eye. The manufactory in Vöcklabruck still works with mechanical looms, which are superior to modern machines in their precision because they absorb the irregular thread flow typical of linen instead of fighting it. This results in fabrics with that uniform irregularity that machine perfection can never achieve.

The product

Mariage is available as a tablecloth and napkin. The fabric is made of 100 percent European pure linen in a jacquard weave, without the addition of cotton or synthetic fibers. The color palette comprises nine shades and ranges from classic white to the pastel softness of Sakura and the cool restraint of Blue Fog and Arctic Blue to the earthy, warm nuances of Linen, Terra and Stone. Rust Red lends the table a southern European warmth, while Lago adds a touch of Mediterranean freshness. Each color scheme was chosen so that it can be combined with both white porcelain and colored stoneware – the design supports the setting without imposing itself.

Care Instructions

Linen table linen can withstand temperatures of up to 60 degrees Celsius, with white qualities 95 degrees is also possible. However, lower washing temperatures of between 40 and 60 degrees are gentle on the fibers and prolong their life. It is important not to use detergents with optical brighteners – they bleach out the natural color pigments and make the fabric appear grey. Organic detergents without synthetic additives are ideal. The machine should not be overfilled: Linen needs freedom of movement to unfold in the water. Spin at a moderate speed – 800 to a maximum of 1,000 revolutions – and remove the laundry while it is still slightly damp. To iron, place the tablecloth or napkin on the ironing board in this state and use the highest temperature setting on your iron. Linen loves heat and residual moisture – this is the only way to completely smooth out the fibers without hardening them. Avoid the tumble dryer: it removes all moisture from the fabric and causes it to shrink. Air dry linen table linen, indoors if necessary, and iron in good time. Stains from red wine or coffee are best treated immediately with cold water – the smooth linen fiber releases stains more easily than cotton, provided you react quickly.
