Hemp Bedding

Hemp Bedding – Robust, Sustainable and Surprisingly Soft

Hemp is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world — and is experiencing a comeback as a textile. Our hemp bedding comes from the Upper Austrian manufacturer Vieböck and is made from pure hemp fabric or as a hemp-linen blend, GOTS-certified and produced to order. In the bedroom, hemp combines the robustness and longevity of linen with an ecological footprint that no other natural fibre can match.

Hemp as a Textile – What Makes the Fibre Special

Hemp fibre belongs, like linen (flax), to the bast fibres. The two materials share many properties: both are temperature-regulating, moisture-absorbing and become softer with every wash. But there are differences.
Hemp fibre is somewhat coarser than flax and naturally more resistant to abrasion. This makes hemp bedding particularly long-lasting — comparable to linen, which lasts 15 to 20 years. The feel is initially firmer and cooler, but develops a suppleness after just a few washes that many users describe as warmer and fuller than linen.
Hemp absorbs up to 30% of its own weight in moisture and releases it quickly. On warm nights, hemp bedding feels cool and dry; in winter, the dense weave retains body heat. Vieböck aptly describes the fabric as “warming yet smooth at the same time.”
Vieböck’s hemp fabrics are processed purely mechanically — without chemical treatment. The result is a natural fabric that fully retains its skin-friendly properties.

Hemp vs Linen – Similarities and Differences

Anyone choosing between hemp bedding and linen bed linen is comparing two closely related materials. Both come from European cultivation, both can be GOTS-certified, both last for decades.
The key difference lies in cultivation: hemp grows faster than flax, requires neither irrigation nor crop protection, and yields more fibre mass per hectare. For the overall ecological balance, hemp is the most consistent choice.
In feel, the fabrics differ subtly. Linen is suppler from the start and has the characteristic cool touch that makes it a classic for summer nights. Hemp starts firmer, but becomes softer with every wash and develops its own, fuller hand over the months.
Vieböck offers both materials — pure organic linen bedding and pure hemp bedding — as well as blended fabrics that combine the advantages of both fibres. The blend is particularly suited for newcomers who want to get to know the hemp feel first.

Setting Up the Hemp Bed – Matching Combinations

Hemp bedding can be easily combined with linen and cotton. A few recommendations:
Material unity: Those who want to carry the cool, natural character of hemp through consistently can pair the hemp duvet cover with a linen bed sheet — hemp and linen harmonise in feel and look. Add linen pillowcases in natural tones.
Contrast: An exciting material mix comes from adding a linen bedspread in a darker colour — the different textures (hemp smooth, linen structured) create a vivid picture.
Sleep climate: For the colder season, a all-season duvet or winter duvet from Hefel fits under the hemp cover — natural materials from duvet to cover.
Sustainability: Vieböck’s hemp bedding is GOTS-certified (Global Organic Textile Standard). The entire production — from cultivation through mechanical processing to finishing — takes place in Austria. Hemp requires neither pesticides nor artificial irrigation during cultivation and binds CO₂ while growing.
Care: Similar to linen. Machine washable at 60 °C, no fabric softener needed. Hemp softens naturally — ironing is not required; those who prefer it smoother can iron slightly damp. Full care tips at Care & Durability.
All sizes available. Each set is produced to order — delivery time approx. one to two weeks. All linen bed linen.
