Silk Bedding

Silk Bedding – Mulberry Silk for Discerning Sleep Comfort

Noble mulberry silk is the fabric for discerning sleepers who want genuine comfort rather than decorative luxury — temperature-adaptive, gentle on skin and hair, and built to last decades when cared for properly. At Linen Lounge you will find bedding made from 100% mulberry silk by the German manufacturer Seidenweber (Plauener Seidenweberei) — woven in damask technique and produced to order. Anyone who has experienced silk understands why the term “silky smooth” has been anchored in language for centuries.

What Makes Silk Bedding Special?

The fibre of mulberry silk is smoother than any other natural fibre. This has concrete advantages for sleep:
Skin care: The smooth surface creates almost no friction between skin and fabric. For people with sensitive skin, eczema or acne, this can make the difference between a restful and a restless night. Dermatologists frequently recommend silk as an alternative to coarser fabric structures.
Temperature regulation: Silk cools in warmth and insulates in cold — similar to linen, but with a softer, cooler feel. On hot summer nights, silk bedding feels noticeably cooler than cotton.
Hair and skin: The low friction reduces hair breakage and sleep creases on the face — an effect that cotton and linen cannot provide by design.
Silk bedding is most effective as a complete set of duvet cover, pillowcase and bed sheet — so the skin benefits all around.

Mulberry Silk – the World's Only Natural Continuous Filament

Not all silk is suitable for high-quality bedding. Wild silk and tussah silk have an irregular surface that is interesting for clothing but unsuitable for bedding.
Mulberry silk is obtained from the cocoon of the mulberry silkworm — the only natural filament, meaning a continuous fibre without interruption. This enables fabrics of extraordinary smoothness and strength. A rope made of silk fibres bears higher loads than a steel rope of the same thickness. In practice, this tensile strength means: silk bedding barely wears with proper care and does not fade.
The quality of mulberry silk is measured in momme (mm) — a unit for area weight. High-quality silk bedding lies between 19 and 25 momme. The Seidenweber collection at Linen Lounge falls within this range.

Seidenweber – German Silk Weaving with a Century of Tradition

The Plauener Seidenweberei — known under the brand name Seidenweber — is one of the last silk manufacturers in Europe. With roughly a century of experience, Seidenweber produces bedding in damask weaving technique: an elaborate process in which the pattern is woven directly into the fabric rather than printed. Jacquard looms process up to 40,000 warp threads at 320 cm width. The patterns change with the light: subtle at noon, shimmering in candlelight. One of the last manufacturers in Germany processing mulberry silk from raw thread to finished bedding entirely in-house. Every step in Plauen. OEKO-TEX certified.
Besides pure silk bedding, Seidenweber also offers cotton bedding in premium quality — an alternative for those who appreciate the aesthetics of damask weaving but prefer a more robust material. These can be found in our cotton bed linen category.

Silk Compared: How Does It Differ from Linen and Cotton?

Silk, linen and cotton are the three natural fibres in our bedding range. Each has its strength:
Silk (here): smoothest feel, lowest friction — ideal for sensitive skin and a luxurious sleep experience. Requires more care and is more sensitive to perspiration and mechanical stress. Maximum luxury.
Linen: more robust, longer-lasting and easier to care for. Exceeds silk in moisture absorption (up to 35% of its own weight) and is the better choice for hot summer nights with heavy perspiration. The feel is cooler and more textured — a difference that comes down to personal taste.
Cotton from Peter Reed: the uncomplicated all-rounder — easy to care for, affordable, and in high thread counts (up to 1000tc) exceptionally soft. It achieves neither the smoothness of silk nor the temperature regulation of linen, but for many people it is the most familiar fabric in the bedroom.
Care: Max 30 °C, silk programme or hand wash. Silk detergent, no fabric softener, no spin. Dry flat in shade. Iron at low temperature only if needed. Loungewear from the same silk. Full care tips at Care & Durability.
