Narrow, Wide or Double — Three Forms, Three Effects

The narrow runner (30–45 cm wide): The classic form. It emphasises the longitudinal axis of the table and provides a guiding line for candles, vases and crockery. On a long dining table, it acts like a thread that holds the setting together. Common sizes: 30x150, 35x180, 40x200 and 45x220 cm.
The wide, short runner (from 50 cm wide): More of an island than an axis. Placed centrally on a square or round table, it creates an area for a generous decorative composition — flowers, candles, a bowl of fruit. Particularly effective on tables that are too large for a tablecloth. Sizes around 50x100 or 50x120 cm.
Two parallel runners: The unconventional option for modern tables. Two narrow runners parallel to each other, the space between becoming the stage for the crockery. Looks graphic, youthful and creates a deliberate break with traditional table decoration.

Not Just for the Dining Table

A linen table runner works wherever a long surface needs an accent:
On the sideboard or chest of drawers as a decorative band under picture frames, vases or books. On the windowsill as a base for plants — linen is absorbent and protects the wood. At celebrations and weddings as a structural element on long tables, combined with matching linen napkins and placemats as place definitions.
Geniksa’s Arctica series offers table runners in a 2-pack — ideal when a single runner is not enough for long tables.

Colours, Combinations and Care

Linen table runners work most powerfully in natural tones: ecru, natural, sand — the colours the fibre naturally brings. On a dark wooden table, they create a contrast that shows off both the table and the runner.
For accents, Leitner Leinen and Libeco offer runners in earth tones and muted colours — terracotta, olive, mustard yellow. These can be swapped seasonally: warm tones in autumn and winter, light ones in spring and summer.
The combination with a linen tablecloth as a base creates a layering effect — two textures, two tones, more depth. Or the reverse: runner directly on the bare table, with only napkins. Less is often more with linen.
Care: Wash linen table runners at 40 °C, no fabric softener, air dry. Ironing is optional — the natural crumpled look belongs to the material. For a smoother finish, iron slightly damp at medium temperature. Full tips at Care & Durability.
