Salem linen bedding from Libeco
Salem linen bedding wears its colours with confidence. Blue and white stripes run over a leather brown ground, woven in pure linen twill. The idea came from the romantic, slightly faded charm of an old beach house, the kind with salt on the windows and sun on the floorboards. Since the stripes cover the whole surface, the contrast stays clear and calm at once. Salem pairs well with the Patagonian Stripe bedspread, although it gets along with many other accessories too.

Twill weaving in Meulebeke
Salem comes from the looms of Libeco in Meulebeke, West Flanders, a house that opened in 1858. Twill asks more of a weaver than a plain cloth, because each pass shifts the binding by one thread and so builds the diagonal line. Libeco therefore weaves Salem slowly and densely. Its quality earned the Belgian royal household’s attention in 2006, when the mill became a Royal Warrant Holder. Each Salem fabric also bears the Masters of Linen label, which demands rigorous testing and production solely in Europe. Eco Line and Oeko-Tex, in addition, confirm a cloth free of harmful substances, while GOTS governs the organic flax.

Description

Salem, striped twill in pure linen

Salem weighs 190 grams per square metre, a heavy quality in washed linen. Its twill binding runs diagonally, so the surface shimmers faintly and feels smooth and cool against the skin. Linen moderates temperature too, airy in summer and comforting once the evenings turn cold. The long flax fibre absorbs moisture readily and repels dirt, which keeps the bed fresh for longer. Libeco treats the cloth mechanically only. Thus it stays kind to the skin, creases less and grows softer with each wash. The leather brown, white and blue stripes appear in the Libeco bed linen collection, ready to combine with plain shades.

Care

Because Salem is coloured linen, keep its wash at 60 degrees or below, although white linen could go to 95. Cooler water, in fact, helps any linen last. Detergents with optical brighteners would drain the leather brown, so choose one without. Never cram the machine. Set a gentle spin of short duration, then the remaining moisture keeps creases mild. If you iron, do so on the hot setting with the fabric still a little damp. Over-drying can shrink linen, therefore hang Salem up rather than using the dryer.
