Down Duvet
A down duvet offers what no other fill material can match: maximum warmth at minimum weight. Goose down traps air in its three-dimensional structure — millions of fine plumules create an insulating layer that lies almost weightlessly on the body. All down duvets at Linen Lounge are from Hefel in Vorarlberg and available as summer, winter and all-season variants.

The quality of a down duvet is determined by loft power, measured in cubic inches (cuin). Loft power describes the ability of down to return to its original volume after compression. The higher the cuin value, the better the warmth performance at lower weight — and the longer the duvet retains its insulating properties over years of use.
Loft power depends on the origin of the geese: the colder and more northern the region, the more robust and voluminous the down. Eider duck down — hand-collected from nests in Iceland — is considered the pinnacle, with loft power values above 700 cuin. Arctic goose down from Siberia and Canada follows closely.
Hefel processes down in various quality levels: the Silver Down series offers solid everyday quality, Gold Down provides premium loft power, and Platinum Down represents the highest grade. The Alaska series uses Arctic goose down for maximum insulation.
Summer down duvet (warmth class 1–2): Minimal fill weight, maximum breathability. Down regulates moisture efficiently even in small quantities — the lightest down duvets feel barely heavier than a bed sheet while still providing enough insulation for nights that cool after midnight.
All-season down duvet (warmth class 3): The middle ground — enough fill for cool autumn nights, enough air circulation for warm spring evenings. The most versatile choice for heated bedrooms.
Winter down duvet (warmth class 4–5): Maximum fill weight, box-stitch construction with high sidewalls to prevent cold bridges. The classic choice for cold sleepers and unheated bedrooms. Pairs ideally with a down pillow for a consistent sleep climate from head to foot.

Down duvets can last 15 to 20 years with proper care. The most important habits: shake the duvet daily to redistribute the fill and maintain loft. Air regularly — ideally outdoors on dry days, never in direct sunlight.
Washing: Down duvets can be machine washed at 40–60 °C with a mild down detergent, but professional cleaning is gentler on the fill. No fabric softener — it coats the down and destroys loft power. After washing, tumble-dry thoroughly at low temperature with two tennis balls — this breaks up clumps and restores volume. Incomplete drying is the most common cause of premature down degradation and odour.
Storage: Store in a breathable cotton bag, never in plastic. Down needs air circulation even in storage to prevent moisture and mildew.
All Hefel down duvets are NOMITE-certified — suitable for dust mite allergy sufferers. The dense casing weave (typically 260tc+ cotton or cotton sateen) prevents dust mites from penetrating. Full care tips at Care & Durability.
A down duvet reaches its full potential as part of a coordinated system. Pair with a Hefel down pillow — same material, same sleep climate. Add a mattress topper for consistent comfort from base to cover. A linen bed sheet as base and linen bed linen as cover complete the system — linen’s moisture regulation complements down’s warmth perfectly.
