Egyptian cotton bed linen
Egyptian cotton — specifically the Mako variety (also known as Giza cotton) — is the raw material behind all cotton bed linen at Linen Lounge. Unlike the short-staple cotton used in over 90% of global textile production, Mako is a long-staple fibre (Gossypium barbadense) that produces smoother, stronger and more lustrous yarn. It accounts for roughly 5% of the world cotton harvest — making it a genuinely rare raw material.

Mako cotton grows exclusively in the Nile Delta under controlled conditions: temperate climate, nutrient-rich alluvial soil, regulated irrigation from the Nile. These conditions produce fibres of 35–40 mm length — nearly twice that of standard upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum, typically 20–25 mm).
Longer fibres mean fewer joins in the yarn. Fewer joins mean a smoother surface, which translates to less pilling, better colour retention and a softer feel that improves rather than deteriorates over years of use. The difference is measurable: Egyptian Mako cotton retains its tensile strength for roughly twice as long as short-staple alternatives.
Other premium long-staple varieties include Peruvian Pima cotton and Caribbean Sea Island cotton. All share similar properties but differ in availability and character. Mako remains the most established and most widely used premium cotton in European bedding manufacturing.
Peter Reed sources Egyptian Mako cotton directly and processes it entirely in England. The cotton is woven in Italy into greige cloth, then finished — dyed, mercerised and confectioned — at Peter Reed’s facility in Lancashire. This dual-country production combines Italian weaving expertise with English finishing tradition.
Peter Reed holds a Royal Warrant from King Charles III, granted in 2024. The company has supplied the British Royal Household for generations. Every set sold at Linen Lounge follows this same production path — from Egyptian field to Italian loom to English finishing to your bedroom.
The result is available in two weaves: percale (plain weave, 210–400tc, matte and cool) and satin (sateen weave, 1000tc, glossy and warm).

Care depends on the weave: percale at 40–60 °C, satin at 40 °C. Both tumble-dryer safe. No fabric softener. Egyptian Mako cotton softens with use — fabric softener coats the fibres and actually reduces their natural lustre and breathability. Full care tips at Care & Durability.
