What makes this piece special

Sea Island bed linen from Peter Reed
Probably the most exclusive and expensive bed linen ever – made from the rarest cotton fabric in the world. Pure luxury: the Caribbean climate, and presumably also the volcanic soil, ensure that the fibers of Gossypium barbadense grow longer, finer and in greater numbers than those of any other cotton plant. The result is a unique cotton, Sea Island Cotton, from which unique fabrics can be woven. However, the cultivation of this variety is very laborious and the plant is sensitive. The total annual harvest of Gossypium barbadense in the British West Indies is only around 130 bales.

Sea Island bed linen from Peter Reed

Sea Island bed linen from Peter Reed. Feel like a queen, like a king in bed with bed linen from the traditional English weaving mill Peter Reed. The Caribbean climate produces a cotton whose average fibre length is 50 mm. No other cotton can compete with this. At the same time, the fibre content of the plant is approximately 20% higher than in other cotton plants. Traditionally snow-white and bearing Peter Reed’s trademark embroidered cords. These cords were already part of Peter Reed’s bed linen when Queen Victoria still ruled the British Empire. Sea Island cotton with 600 threads per square inch (6.45 square centimetres).
One person sleeps in an antique bed, dressed in Sea Island bedding by Peter Reed, surrounded by framed portraits, elegant stucco work, high ceilings and large windows that cast light into the large classic room.

The Weaving Mill

Since 1880, Peter Reed has been the supplier to the British Royal Household, holding a “Royal Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen”. This title as a manufacturer of bed linen was impressively renewed in January 2008. It is an honour of which one can be very proud. Peter Reed has been producing in Lancashire since 1861 and traditionally stands for English excellence and luxury. Peter Reed is one of the few factories that have been operating in Great Britain for over a century. The founder, Peter William Reed, was a farmer in Barley on the slopes of Pendle Hill in Lancashire (where the last known witches lived).

  • 100% unique long-staple Caribbean cotton
  • with mother-of-pearl buttons
  • Soft but hard-wearing cloth
  • Thread density of 600 threads per inch (percale)
  • available as comforter cover and pillow

You can order two different cushion covers. Standard or Oxford.
Peter Reed ‘Oxford style’ cushion covers with a decorative flange are sewn throughout with traditional mitred corners. Their construction requires the assembly of three separate pieces of fabric and skillful sewing. The end result is a flange that rests on the corners when placed on the bed, unlike the usual Oxford construction which can create a “rabbit ear” effect.
The unrivaled long staple length, the fine combing of the cotton, the high thread count, the very special weaving of the edges result in an extremely soft but hard-wearing cloth. Generous hems, cord seams, double topstitching and safety stitching for durability. ‘Oxford style’ cushion covers sewn with traditional mitered corners throughout.

Care Instructions

Colored bed linen made of long-staple cotton can be washed up to 60°, white up to 95°. As with all materials, the same applies to long-staple cotton: it will last longer if washed at a lower temperature. What the material does not like are detergents with optical brighteners, they bleach the colors strongly and the fabric becomes light. Creasing: Long-staple cotton likes sufficient residual moisture. Do not pack the machine too full so that the fabric can move, do not spin the laundry too hard or for too long. If you want to iron it, iron the items on the cotton setting of your iron when they are still a little damp.
