What Organic Means for Cotton — and Why It Matters

Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops globally. It accounts for roughly 6% of all pesticides used in agriculture worldwide, despite occupying less than 3% of arable land. The environmental impact — soil degradation, water pollution, biodiversity loss — is well documented.
Organic cotton certification addresses this across the entire production chain: from seed selection and cultivation through ginning and spinning to weaving and finishing. No synthetic chemicals at any stage. The fibres are processed mechanically rather than chemically softened.
The difference for the end product is subtle but real: organic cotton retains more of its natural oils and structure, which contributes to a slightly fuller hand feel. For people with chemical sensitivities or skin conditions, the absence of processing residues can make a measurable difference in comfort.

GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Organic — Which Certification Counts?

OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Tests the finished product for harmful substances. Confirms that what touches your skin is safe. Does not certify cultivation or working conditions. All Peter Reed cotton carries this certification.
Organic (EU/USDA): Certifies that the raw cotton was grown without synthetic chemicals. Covers cultivation but not necessarily every processing step.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): The most comprehensive standard. Certifies the entire production chain from field to finished product. At least 70% organic fibres. Strict environmental and social criteria. For GOTS-certified bedding in linen, see organic linen bed linen from Vieböck — certified GOTS + IVN Best across the entire range.

Genuine Craftsmanship

Crafted by people who have learned their trade over generations.

Sustainability

Material, production, people – genuine sustainability. Fabrics traceable to the Atlantic coast.

Durable

Linen bedding can be washed at low temperatures and becomes softer with each wash.

Breathable

Linen bedding keeps you pleasantly cool in summer and cozy warm in winter. Bedding for all seasons.

Sizes and Care

Available in all standard sizes from 135x200 to 220x240. In percale and satin weave.
Care is identical to conventional Peter Reed cotton: percale at 40–60 °C, satin at 40 °C. Tumble-dryer safe. No fabric softener — this is particularly important for organic cotton, as softeners coat the fibres with synthetic chemicals, effectively negating the benefit of organic cultivation. Use a mild, ecological detergent to keep the fabric as close to its natural state as possible. Full care tips at Care & Durability.
For organic bedding in linen: organic linen bed linen. For organic hemp: hemp bedding from Vieböck. All cotton bed linen.
