Shetland Grey linen-wool mix from Libeco
Grey can feel cold, but not in the Shetland Grey linen wool coverlet. Here flax and wool fibres join before they ever become yarn. The result is a warm grey melange with a soft, living surface. Its tone recalls the mist over the Shetland Islands, calm and without hurry. On a bed it becomes a still background for everything else. Then, on a winter evening, it simply moves to the sofa.

Wool as the starting point
For Libeco’s designer, Shetland started with a small swatch of wool and soon turned into a larger tale, with linen and wool in the leading roles and rich textures around them. The collection continues where Moroccan Stripe left off. Its names refer to special breeds of sheep, and Grey is one of three gentle colours. In Belgium, Libeco has woven since 1858. Then, in 2006, it received the Royal Warrant from the Belgian royal house. The Belgian Linen seal stands for sustainable work, while Masters of Linen guarantees European production. So Shetland Grey carries a long Flemish tradition into a very modern neutral.

Description

Shetland Grey, linen and wool as one

In this coverlet the linen, 70 per cent of the whole, and the washed wool do not lie side by side in separate threads. They share each strand, which gives the grey melange its depth. Linen contributes coolness and resists dust, whereas wool adds volume and insulation. For that reason the coverlet suits most of the year. A 3 cm hem closes the top and bottom edges, and the selvedge sides need no further finishing. Even at 610 grams per square metre, the cloth drapes easily. Matching cushion covers come in two sizes, each with a zip and a small woollen bow. Shetland Grey is part of the Libeco throws collection.

Care

Look first at the care label stitched into Shetland Grey, because its instructions outrank any general advice on linen. With wool woven through the flax, a cool and careful wash suits the coverlet best. Moreover, a mild detergent without optical brighteners keeps the melange from turning flat and pale. Rather than the dryer, choose patience: spread the coverlet out and let it dry lying flat. Thus the heavy cloth keeps its drape, and the grey stays soft and even over the years.
