What Makes Egyptian Mako Cotton Special

The quality of cotton is determined by fibre length. Long-staple varieties — botanically Gossypium barbadense — produce a more uniform, smoother yarn than short-staple mass-market cotton. The result: bedding that is softer, pills less and retains its colour for years.
Mako cotton (also known as Giza cotton) grows in the Nile Delta under conditions that preclude mass cultivation: temperate climate, nutrient-rich soil, controlled irrigation. Other premium varieties such as Peruvian Pima cotton and Caribbean Sea Island cotton share these properties but are rarer still.
Peter Reed has been processing Mako cotton for generations — the company supplies, among others, the British Royal Household. Every set is woven, dyed and finished in Lancashire. Peter Reed holds a Royal Warrant from King Charles III (granted 2024).

Percale or Satin — Two Weaves, Two Characters

All cotton bed linen at Linen Lounge is woven in either percale or satin. The weave determines the feel, the look and the sleep experience:
Percale is a plain weave — one thread over, one thread under. This produces a matte, cool, crisp-fresh feel. Percale feels like a well-ironed shirt. Peter Reed offers percale in 210tc, 260tc and 400tc (thread count = threads per square inch) — the higher, the denser and smoother. Percale is the first choice for those who prefer it cool and fresh.
Satin is a sateen weave — one thread glides over four or more. This creates the characteristic glossy, silky surface. Satin feels warmer and softer than percale. Peter Reed’s 1000tc satin is the highest-quality cotton fabric in our range — extremely dense, extremely smooth, with a subtle sheen.
If you’re unsure: percale is the all-rounder, satin is the luxury.

In colour, Peter Reed moves in the classic spectrum: white, ivory, silver and muted tones. White cotton bed linen is the bestseller — timeless, hotel-grade, washable at 60 °C. For warmer tones we recommend the beige variants.
The Mako cotton for Peter Reed is organically certified and cultivated under controlled Egyptian growing conditions. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.

Cotton or Linen — an Honest Comparison

If you’re searching for cotton bed linen and land on Linen Lounge, you might ask: why does a linen shop sell cotton? The answer: because both materials have their place.
Cotton is soft from day one — no breaking in required. It is available in higher thread counts than linen and in sateen weave offers a smoothness that linen cannot achieve by design. For anyone who prefers smooth, glossy bedding, cotton satin is the right choice.
Linen bed linen surpasses cotton in temperature regulation and moisture absorption, lasts longer (15–20 years vs. 5–10) and improves with every wash. The feel is cooler and more textured — you have to like that.
Those who want both will find the compromise in our half-linen bedding: linen coolness meets cotton softness.
