Peter Reed is undoubtedly one of the world’s most renowned bed linen manufacturers, because the Queen sleeps in their bedding. Not only does the royal family sleep in their sheets, but many leading international hotels also entrust them with the sleep of their guests. The manufacturing facilities have returned to their former location in Lancashire and remain committed to the high, traditional standards of their craft.
Peter Reed – the Queen sleeps in this lingerie…
What is not entirely self-evident: since the 1880s, Peter Reed has been the royal purveyor of bed linen to the British royal family, with only a brief interruption, holding the “Royal Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen.” This may have something to do with the fact that Peter Reed uses only the finest combed cotton from the Nile Delta, naturally long-staple fibers measuring around 35 mm, which are woven in Italy and then processed in England into the finest percale bed linen. Only such long fibers can be used to spin the yarns that allow the fine yet dense weave of percale. One characteristic of Peter Reed percale is that it does not yellow. Peter Reed manufactures exclusively to order; there is no stock.
The fine yet strong fabric is usually used for inlets with a special weave density that does not allow feathers to pass through. The bed linen and linen bedding can be finished with either triple or quintuple decorative stitching. This decorative detail became popular in 1870. It made it easier for chambermaids to distinguish between different qualities of bed linen. The highest quality linen is finished with three shiny decorative seams – the so-called “3 row sateen cord”. This type of bed linen was used in the most prestigious homes and elegant hotels. And what’s more, the Queen sleeps in this linen. The decorative stitching is on the top of the linen, creating the impression of a picture frame. The covers also feature attractive yarn-wrapped buttons.
