Arctica linen placemats from Geniksa
The Arctica linen placemats from Geniksa carry a fine houndstooth pattern that you notice only on a second look. It lies in the weave, not on the surface, and therefore reads the same on both sides. Geniksa works it from natural yarn, undyed and unbleached, so the grey keeps a cool reserve. A pattern like this has no season. It simply stays, place after place, meal after meal, while fashions come and go around it.

Houndstooth from a Baltic loom
On the Baltic coast, Geniksa weaves European flax in a manner that borders on the purist. Pure linen, the mill holds, needs no ornament beyond its own presence and its unmistakable hand. Arctica tests that conviction, because even its houndstooth pattern comes only from the play of threads. The Masters of Linen label, which every Geniksa fabric bears, vouches for production solely within Europe and for rigorous testing. Eco Line and Oeko-Tex complete the picture: no harmful substances, and no chemical bleaching, dyeing or treatment. Production runs CO₂-neutrally, so the quiet of the cloth extends to the way it comes into being.

Description

Arctica, houndstooth in heavy linen

Arctica’s cloth weighs 240 g/m²: 100 per cent washed linen, its yarn spun to Nm 26. That substance shows the moment you lay the table: the placemats stay flat, and the napkins keep their shape when folded. Since the houndstooth belongs to the weave, washing cannot fade it away. The dense flax also repels dirt, while each cycle makes the surface a touch softer. Because the yarn remains unbleached flax, the pattern keeps a muted depth beside glass and porcelain. Geniksa finishes the cloth by purely mechanical means. Arctica forms part of the Geniksa placemats range and matches the Arctica tablecloth.

Care

Moderate heat suits Arctica best: coloured linen allows up to 60 degrees and white linen up to 95, yet lower temperatures always lengthen its life. Optical brighteners have no place here, since they bleach natural tones and leave the cloth looking washed out. Load the machine loosely. Spin with restraint and not for long, as damp linen creases far less. For crisp napkins, iron them slightly moist on the hot linen setting. The houndstooth will look after itself.
