Finding the Right Size — Overhang Decides

The tablecloth should hang evenly over the table edge on all sides. How far determines the style:
20–30 cm overhang (classic): The standard for everyday use. The cloth reaches just past seat height — tidy, understated, practical.
40–50 cm overhang (festive): More fabric, more impact. For dinner invitations and special occasions. Linen falls heavily enough not to flutter even with generous overhang.
50 cm+ overhang (opulent): The table robe — the cloth falls almost to the floor. Looks lavish and inviting, particularly on round tables. Libeco and Geniksa offer oversizes up to 320x260 cm that enable this look.
The rule of thumb: Measure the tabletop, add the desired overhang on each side. A table of 160x90 cm with 30 cm overhang needs a cloth of at least 220x150 cm.

Colours and Styles — From Everyday to Formal

White and ivory: The classic for every occasion. Matches any crockery, reflects candlelight and can be washed at 60 °C. Hoffmann’s damask tablecloths in white with hemstitch are the choice for formal occasions.
Natural and sand: Undyed linen in its original tone — warm, casual, perfect for country house style and the Sunday table. Geniksa’s tablecloths in natural show the fibre as it grew.
Grey and anthracite: Modern, urban, versatile. A dark grey linen tablecloth brings softness to a table made of concrete or metal.
Earth tones and colour: Terracotta, sage green, navy blue — for seasonal accents and dinners where the table itself becomes a talking point. Leitner Leinen offers the boldest colour palette in jacquard weave.

Robust, Absorbent, Charmingly Crumpled — and Care

Linen is the ideal tablecloth material because it unites requirements that contradict each other in other fabrics: robust enough for daily use, yet absorbent and quick-drying. Spills are absorbed without immediately staining — the smooth flax fibre takes up liquid more slowly than cotton.
The creasing behaviour of linen is intentional on the table: the lived-in look appears casual and homely. For formal occasions, iron the tablecloth slightly damp with steam — skip the hemstitch.
A linen tablecloth lasts decades with proper care and becomes softer with every wash. Wash at 40–60 °C, no fabric softener. Air dry. Full care tips at Care & Durability.
A linen tablecloth forms the base — build upon it with matching napkins in the same or contrasting tone, a table runner laid diagonally across the cloth, and placemats as place markers. An overview of all table textiles in our category Table and Dining.
