People usually think of grey as neutral, yet the Caroline linen table setting from Geniksa makes something more of it. A silvery light grey settles under porcelain and glass and frames them with discretion. Even on a table left unset, the napkins and placemats hold their own. That composure has a Scandinavian quality. It asks for nothing, and therefore it stays. Then the meal arrives, and the cloth recedes, as good linen should.

Purist weaving on the Baltic
Few details distract in a Geniksa fabric, and that is the intention. The mill’s almost purist style comes from a love of nature, because pure linen proves itself through its appearance and its particular touch. Caroline translates this into a pale, cool grey that lets the weave speak. The flax grows in Europe, and Geniksa weaves it on the Baltic coast in a CO₂-neutral process. Each of its fabrics bears the Masters of Linen seal, a promise of manufacture solely in Europe and of close examination. In addition, Eco Line and Oeko-Tex rule out harmful substances in the finished cloth.

Description

Caroline, silvery grey linen for the table

Geniksa makes Caroline from 100 per cent washed linen; the yarn has a count of Nm 26, the finished cloth a weight of 240 g/m². The result has substance: placemats that stay where you lay them, napkins that fold neatly and keep their line. Because the flax fibre is smooth and dense, dirt finds little hold, and the cloth washes clean at up to 60 degrees. Over time it also grows softer. Its silvery light grey works with white porcelain as readily as with darker stoneware. Caroline shares its colour with the Caroline tablecloth, and the other shades appear in the Geniksa placemats collection.

Care

Caroline counts as coloured linen, so keep washes at 60 degrees or below; only white linen goes up to 95. Lower heat, in general, gives any fabric a longer life. Steer clear of optical brighteners, as they bleach natural colours and leave the grey looking pale. Do not overfill the drum, and spin softly for a short time. A trace of moisture helps the cloth relax without deep creases. Should you iron, set the iron to linen, the hot setting, and work while the fabric is slightly damp.
